To evaluate the feasibility of the proposed method, a prototype has been designed and evaluated. Experimental results indicate that the designed Kalman filter estimates the internal states of a system

Re-envisioning Decolonizing Pedagogies: Beyond Knowing, Delving into Being as an Access to Possible Decolonial Futures

This article argues that ontological phenomenological methods, addressing being, becoming, and existence, provide novel forms of knowledge production and pathways to decolonizing pedagogy in higher education through critiquing its neoliberalist and anthropocentric settler-colonial foundations. Two metaphors are employed to explore ontological pedagogy: one metaphor highlights the linguistic dynamics of joke-telling and the other compares the acquisition of a new language to ontological learning. A concise overview of decolonizing pedagogy and ontological phenomenological pedagogy is provided through sharing the author\u27s experiences, positionality, and exposures to these frameworks. The inquiry also explores whether ontological pedagogical framework remains mainly discursive or leads to material change, especially in light of autobiographical accounts of the author\u27s encounters with systemic, material, and discursive oppression. The author intentionally refrains from conclusions, inviting readers to engage in a nuanced exploration of a less-traveled realm of ontological inquiry in higher education

Fermionic Tachyons as a Source of Dark Energy

A model for the universe on the basis of a self interacting fermionic tachyon field is investigated here. It is shown that, devising a self interaction potential of a proper form, the fermionic tachyon field is capable of producing an accelerating expansion that at late time tends to a constant value which is in consistence with the cosmological constant. This way the introduced fermionic tachyon field can be interpreted as the source of dark energy.Comment: 5 figure

Introduction: Identification of metastatic miRNAs and understanding their complex functions provides prognostic and diagnostic bio markers In this study, the expression of miR-372, fgf-9 gene, miR-137 and cdc42 gene was evaluated in the serum of patients with lung cancer.Materials and Methods: In the present study, 50 serum samples were collected from healthy individuals and 50 serum samples from people with NSCLC from Masih Daneshvari Hospital in Tehran. Clinicopathological information was collected through questionnaires. In the molecular study, changes in expression of miR-372, miR-137, fgf-9 and cdc42 genes in healthy individuals and those with lung cancer were evaluated using Real Time PCR.Results: Expression of miR-372, fgf-9 and cdc42 genes in the first to third stage serum of metastases and expression of miR-137 in serum of the first and second stages of the disease were not significantly different from the normal one. However, in the serum of the fourth stage of the disease, expression of miR-372 and cdc42 gene were significantly increased by 7.3 and 3.4 folds than normal subjects, while in the serum of the fourth stage of the disease, the expression of fgf-9 gene was significantly reduced by 4.46 fold .The expression of miR-137 in the serum of the third and fourth stages of the disease was significantly reduced by 3.2 and 6.8 fold compared to the normal serumConclusion: It is likely that the expression of miR-372, miR-137, fgf-9 and cdc42 genes in human serum could be used to predict the stage of lung cancer metastasis

The purpose of this study was to assess the educational need of infertile women admitted to Yazd Reproductive Sciences Institute. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study was conducted in Yazd, Iran. The statistical population included 200 infertile women who were selected through convenience sampling method. The data collection instrument was a researcher-made questionnaire with statistical validity and reliability. Data were collected through interviews and self-reports and then analyzed using SPSS v.16 along with descriptive and analytical statistics. Results: The mean awareness scores of factors related to infertility, sexual satisfaction and nutritional needs were 4.36, 4.03, and 5.02, respectively. There was a significant relationship between awareness of infertility factors and variables such as level of education, spouse’s level of education and place of residence. Moreover, there was a non-significant relationship between awareness of infertility factors and variables such as age, spouse’s age, profession, spouse’s profession, number of referrals to the institute, and insurance type. There was also a significant relationship between awareness of nutritional needs and profession; whereas a non-significant relationship was seen between the specified awareness and variables such as age, spouse’s age, spouse’s profession, level of education, spouse’s level of education, number of referrals to the institute, place of residence and insurance type. Conclusion: Since the studied participants exhibited limited awareness of related factors to infertility, it appears that developing a proper training program to raise awareness of infertility followed by its implementation and evaluation is necessary

Evalution of Programmed Cell Death 4 (PDCD4) Expression in Patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia

    Get PDF
Background: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is clinically, cytogenetically, and molecularly heterogeneous. Advances in molecular research have greatly improved our understanding of the leukemogenesis in AML. Programmed cell death-4 (PDCD4) is a novel tumor suppressor that inhibits neoplastic transformation and tumor progression and invasion by suppressing activator protein (AP)-1 activation and protein translation. In the present study, we examined the PDCD4 expression levels in de novo AML and investigated correlation between altered expression of PDCD4 with patients’ clinical characteristics. Methods: Peripheral blood samples were collected from 56 patients with AML at the time of diagnosis and also, 10 healthy individuals. Quantification of PDCD4 mRNA expression by Real Time Quantitative PCR was performed. Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare PDCD4 expression differences among healthy and AML samples. Findings: PDCD4 mRNA expression was significantly diminished in patients with AML at diagnosis in comparison to the PB as normal samples (P < 0.001). We observed a statistically lower expression in AML-M5 subtype in comparison to other AML subtypes (P = 0.028) . We have not found any significant correlation between PDCD4 expression level and clinical parameters of patients. Also, no significant correlation between the expression levels of PDCD4 and complete remission after induction therapy was observed. Conclusion: Our results shown that, like many epithelial cancers, the down-regulation of PDCD4 expression also occurs in AML

Purpose: To compare lens orientation and rotational recovery of five currently available soft toric lenses. Methods: Twenty subjects were recruited and trialed with each of the study lenses in a random order. Study lenses were PureVision® Toric (B&L), Air Optix® for Astigmatism (Alcon), Biofinity® Toric (CooperVision), Acuvue® Advance for Astigmatism (Vistakon), and Proclear® Toric (CooperVision). Lens orientation in primary position to determine the lens rotation form the vertical position and rotational recovery to primary gaze orientation following a 45° manual misorientation for the different lenses was compared. Results: The Biofinity Toric showed the lowest rotation from the vertical position and the Proclear Toric the highest. Also, the highest and the lowest reorientation speed were related to the Biofinity Toric and the Acuvue Advance for Astigmatism, respectively. The Repeated Measures ANOVA showed a significant difference in the lens rotation (P=. 0.004) and rotational recovery (P<. 0.001) among different contact lenses and the performed multiple comparisons indicated differences in rotation and also in reorientation speed were only seen between the Biofinity Toric when compared to four other lenses (P<. 0.05). Conclusion: Although there was appropriate fitting, based upon lens orientation and reorientation speed, with each of the study lenses it would appear that the optimized ballast technique used in the design of the Biofinity Toric helps reduce lens rotation and improve rotational recovery compared to others
